Do you know what sleep apnoea is? Stop snoring
October 24, 2023
Snoring isn't always harmless. When it comes with pauses in your breathing while you sleep, it may be sleep apnoea, a disorder that affects your rest and your general health.
What is sleep apnoea?
Sleep apnoea consists of repeated pauses in breathing while you sleep, caused by the closing of the airway. Each pause interrupts your rest, even if you don’t fully wake up. The result is unrefreshing sleep and extra strain on the body.
Signs that give it away
It’s worth investigating if the following appear:
- Loud snoring. Especially if it comes with pauses or choking that another person notices.
- Tiredness during the day. Drowsiness, lack of concentration and the feeling of not having rested.
- Waking with a choking sensation. Or a headache on getting up.
The role of the intraoral device
In mild and moderate cases, a mandibular advancement device —a custom-made splint fitted when you sleep— moves the jaw slightly forward and keeps the airway open. It’s comfortable, silent and, for many people, enough to stop snoring and rest better. Always after a proper diagnosis.

Is apnoea only a problem of poor rest?
No. Left untreated, it's linked to high blood pressure and cardiovascular problems, on top of daily tiredness. That's why it's worth diagnosing.
