What do we treat in oral and maxillofacial surgery?
This is the speciality that deals with surgical procedures of the mouth, teeth and jawbones. The most common reason for consultation is wisdom teeth that don’t have room to come through, but we also treat impacted or retained teeth, frenula, cysts, and the preparation of the bone before placing implants. All with a conservative approach: operating only when it helps, and always explaining to you why.
Common reasons for consultation
These are the situations that most often arrive at the surgery clinic:
- Wisdom teeth. When the third molar has no space, becomes impacted or presses on the neighbouring tooth, extraction prevents pain, decay and infections.
- Impacted or retained teeth. Teeth that haven’t erupted and should be extracted or, in some cases, helped to come through.
- Cysts and lesions. Diagnosis and removal of cysts and lesions of the jaws and the tissues of the mouth.
- Pre-prosthetic surgery and implants. Preparation of the bone and tissues so that a prosthesis or an implant settles well.

Do wisdom teeth always have to be removed?
No. They are only extracted when they cause problems or are likely to: lack of space, impaction, decay, recurring infections or pressure on the rest of the teeth. If a wisdom tooth has come through properly and can be cleaned, there's no reason to touch it.
Is the extraction very uncomfortable?
It is carried out under local anaesthetic and is not painful during the procedure. Afterwards there may be swelling and discomfort for a few days, which are well controlled with the regime we give you. We explain the aftercare step by step so your recovery is as comfortable as possible.
