Oral Medicine
When the problem isn't in the tooth, but in the mucosa
Oral medicine deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the soft tissues of the mouth: gums, tongue, palate, cheeks and lips. Mouth ulcers that won't heal, dryness, burning, patches or lesions that have been there a while: all of it has an explanation and a treatment.

What do we treat in oral medicine?
Not everything that happens in the mouth has to do with decay or the gums. The oral mucosa can present recurrent mouth ulcers, white or red lesions, blisters, ulcers that won’t heal, dry mouth (xerostomia) or a burning sensation. In oral medicine we study the origin of these symptoms, rule out serious causes and provide treatment. It’s the speciality that relies most on a thorough examination and, when needed, on further tests.
Common reasons for consultation
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth having us assess it:
- Recurrent mouth ulcers and sores. When they appear frequently or are slow to heal, we look for the cause and ease the discomfort.
- Dry mouth (xerostomia). A lack of saliva isn’t just uncomfortable: it increases the risk of decay and infection. It is treatable.
- Lesions and patches that won’t go away. Any patch, lump or ulcer present for more than two weeks should be checked to rule out problems.
- Burning or stinging sensation. Burning mouth syndrome and other mucosal disorders are diagnosed and treated.
Dudas frecuentes sobre oral medicine
When should I worry about a sore in my mouth?
If a sore, ulcer or patch doesn't go away within two weeks, it's worth having us assess it. Most are harmless, but checking them in time is the best way to put your mind at ease.
My mouth is always dry, is that important?
Yes. Persistent dry mouth promotes tooth decay, fungal infections and discomfort when speaking or eating. We study the cause (medication, habits or others) and give you a solution.
