What does general dentistry include?
General dentistry is the foundation of any dental clinic: regular check-ups, cleanings, cavity treatment, root canals, extractions and everything that keeps the mouth healthy day to day. These are the most needed treatments and the ones that most influence long-term oral health. In our clinic, general dentistry is not a minor service. It is the starting point for getting to know each patient’s mouth and the first filter for spotting any problem before it gets complicated. And when a case needs a specialist, we have one here: there’s no need to refer you elsewhere or start from scratch at another clinic.
We don’t solve your problem and send you somewhere else. Everything is under one roof.
- A complete diagnosis from the very first visit. At the initial check-up we don’t just look for cavities. We assess the gums, the bite, tooth wear, the position of the teeth and any sign worth attention. A thorough check-up is the best investment you can make in your mouth.
- Specialists available in the same clinic. If during a check-up we detect something that needs a specialist in orthodontics, periodontics, implants, maxillofacial surgery or any other area, you don’t need to look for another centre or repeat all the tests. The specialist is here, and so is your case information.
- A preventive approach, not just reactive. Our goal is not to treat you once it already hurts. It is to support you with regular check-ups and professional cleanings so problems are caught and solved while they are still small and treatment is simple.
- We explain everything before doing anything. Before any treatment we explain what we found, what options there are and which we recommend and why. No surprises in the chair and no pressure. We want you to make decisions with all the information on the table.
Which treatments do we carry out in general dentistry?
These are the most common treatments we perform day to day at the clinic:
| Treatment | What it’s for |
|---|---|
| Check-up and diagnosis | Full assessment of the mouth: teeth, gums, bite and tissues. The basis of any treatment plan |
| Professional cleaning | Removal of the tartar and plaque the brush can’t reach. Prevents periodontal disease and keeps gums healthy |
| Cavity treatment | Removal of the cavity and restoration of the tooth with high-quality composite, aesthetic and durable |
| Root canal | Treatment of the tooth’s nerve when decay has reached the pulp. Lets you keep the tooth and avoid extraction |
| Extractions | Removal of teeth beyond saving or that compromise the rest of the mouth, including wisdom teeth |
| Teeth whitening | Lightening of the teeth’s natural shade with a professional, safe technique and controlled results |
| Emergencies | Care for acute pain, fractures, infections or other situations that can’t wait for a routine appointment |
What is a check-up visit like at Clínica Zaplana?
A check-up is not just looking for cavities. This is the usual journey when a patient comes in for a complete check-up:
- History and medical update. We ask about changes in your general health, medication, new symptoms or any discomfort you’ve noticed since your last visit. All of that shapes how we interpret what we see in your mouth.
- Complete clinical examination. We check every tooth for cavities, cracks or wear. We examine the gums, check the bite and assess the overall state of the tissues. If something stands out, we document it and discuss it with you.
- Imaging if needed. When the clinical examination isn’t enough to see everything we need, we take the relevant X-rays or imaging in the clinic itself. No external referrals or waiting.
- Diagnosis and explanation. We explain exactly what we found, what it means and what options there are. If everything is fine, we tell you. If there is something to treat, we present the options clearly before you make any decision.
- Professional cleaning. Unless there’s a reason not to, we round off the visit with a professional cleaning to remove built-up tartar and leave the gums in the best possible condition.
- Follow-up plan. If there are pending treatments, we arrange the necessary appointments. If everything is in order, we tell you when it’s best to return for your next check-up. The goal is for your mouth to always be under control, with no scares.
Dudas frecuentes sobre general dentistry
How often should I see the dentist if nothing hurts?
At least once a year, and twice if you tend to build up tartar or have a history of cavities. Regular check-ups are the most effective tool for catching problems at a very early stage, when treatment is simpler and less expensive. Waiting until it hurts almost always means the problem has already progressed more than necessary.
Does a dental cleaning damage the enamel?
No. A professional cleaning removes the tartar your brush can't reach, and it is completely safe for the enamel. The feeling that your teeth are 'more separated' after a cleaning is because the tartar that covered them is gone, not because anything was damaged.
Is it worth filling a small cavity or better to wait?
It is always worth treating it as soon as possible. A small cavity is a simple filling. If left to progress, it can reach the nerve and require a root canal, or destroy so much of the tooth that extraction becomes the only option. The size of the treatment and its cost grow over time.
Why do you recommend extracting a tooth if it doesn't hurt?
There are situations where a painless tooth can still be causing problems: a poorly positioned wisdom tooth pressing on its neighbour, a root with a chronic infection without symptoms, or a tooth beyond saving. In those cases, removing it in time prevents bigger complications. We always explain the reason before recommending any extraction.
