What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment, popularly known as ‘killing the nerve’, is the procedure with which we remove the dental pulp when it is infected or damaged. The pulp is the living tissue inside the tooth and when it becomes infected it causes that characteristic pain that sometimes becomes unbearable. Our goal with root canal treatment is clear: take away the pain, eliminate the infection and keep your natural tooth.
How to tell if you need a root canal?
We usually recommend this treatment when there is a very deep cavity that has reached the pulp, when you’ve suffered trauma to the tooth, or when an infection appears that we can’t resolve any other way. These are the most common signs:
| Sign | What it may mean |
|---|---|
| Intense, prolonged pain with cold or heat | The pulp is inflamed or infected |
| Spontaneous pain, with no apparent reason | The nerve may be in the process of necrosis |
| Pain when biting or pressing on the tooth | Infection spreading towards the bone |
| Swollen gum or with a ‘pimple’ that oozes | Dental abscess: active infection |
| Darkened tooth with no apparent cause | The pulp may have died after a blow |
| Sensitivity that doesn’t go away after treating a cavity | The cavity may have reached the nerve |
How do we carry out the treatment?
At our clinic we work with up-to-date techniques that make the process far more comfortable than you imagine. In most cases we resolve it in one or two sessions. These are the steps:
- Diagnosis and planning. Before starting, we analyse the state of the tooth with X-rays to see precisely the length and morphology of the canals. With that information, we plan the treatment in detail.
- Local anaesthetic. We numb the area completely. We don’t start until you’re comfortable and feel nothing. This is the moment when most patients tell us: ‘is that it? Well, it wasn’t so bad after all.’
- Opening and access to the canal. We make a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the root canal system where the affected pulp is located.
- Cleaning and disinfection. With precision instruments and irrigating solutions we remove all the infected or necrotic tissue from inside the canal. This step is the most important: the success of the treatment depends on a thorough cleaning.
- Shaping the canal. We give the canal the right shape so the filling material seals perfectly up to the apex, the tip of the root. We work with the exact length of the canal so as not to compromise the surrounding structures.
- Obturation. We fill and seal the canal three-dimensionally with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. The aim is to leave no space where bacteria can settle again.
- Final restoration. The treated tooth needs definitive protection. Depending on the case, we place a build-up or a crown that restores the tooth’s function and appearance, and protects it in the long term.

At Clínica Zaplana we have our own root canal specialists, which makes a real difference to the result. We don’t refer you to other centres: you and your tooth are in the hands of our team from start to finish, with the follow-up and continuity you deserve.
Dudas frecuentes sobre root canal treatment
Does a root canal hurt?
It's the question almost all our patients ask us, and the answer is no. We carry out the treatment under local anaesthetic and the sensation during the session is similar to that of a filling. If you had pain before coming in, you'll most likely feel significant relief once we finish.
How long does the treatment take?
In most cases we resolve it in one or two sessions of roughly an hour. It depends on the tooth and the complexity of the case, something we'll explain to you in detail at the first visit.
Does the treated tooth last a lifetime?
A tooth we treat correctly and restore well can last decades. The key is to protect it afterwards with the right crown and to maintain good dental hygiene.
Is a root canal better than extracting the tooth?
Whenever we can, we keep the natural tooth. Your own tooth works better than any substitute, and you avoid the follow-up treatments that an implant or a prosthesis requires.
How much does a root canal cost in Valencia?
The price varies depending on the tooth, since treating an incisor is not the same as treating a molar with several canals. At your first visit we carry out an assessment with no obligation and explain the exact quote before starting.
