What no one has properly explained about your gums
Your teeth don’t hold themselves up. Beneath the gum there is a structure called the periodontal ligament, a set of fibres that joins each tooth to the bone supporting it. When that ligament is damaged, the tooth loses its base and starts to move. And if we don’t treat it in time, we can lose the tooth even though it’s perfectly healthy inside. The problem is that this disease advances silently. It often doesn’t hurt, and by the time the clear symptoms appear it has already been developing for some time. That’s why it’s so important for someone to detect it and treat it properly from the very start.
How do you know if you have a gum problem?
Your mouth tries to warn you too. These are the most common signs we see in our clinic:
| Sign | What it may mean |
|---|---|
| Your gums bleed when you brush or on their own | Your gums are inflamed and asking you for help |
| Persistent bad breath that won’t go away | There is bacteria built up beneath the gum that the brush can’t reach |
| Your gums have receded and your teeth look longer | The gum is pulling back and leaving the tooth unprotected |
| One or more teeth are moving | The bone holding the tooth is weakened and needs urgent treatment |
| Sensitivity at the root of the tooth | The gum has receded so much that the most sensitive part of the tooth is now exposed |
| Swollen, red gums or gums with pus | There is an active infection that won’t go away on its own |
Why does gum disease appear?
The disease almost always starts in the same way: an inflammation of the gums known as gingivitis. If we don’t treat it, that inflammation advances towards the bone and turns into periodontitis, which is when the damage becomes deeper. The causes can be local (insufficient hygiene, teeth in a poor position, a bite that loads badly on a particular tooth, or fillings that don’t fit well) but there are also systemic factors that have a big influence and are sometimes overlooked: pregnancy, puberty, uncontrolled diabetes, certain medications, smoking or stress. At our clinic we analyse your whole case to understand what lies behind your particular problem, we don’t just treat the symptom.
What do we do to treat it?
Periodontal treatment isn’t an ordinary cleaning. It’s a deep, specialised cleaning that reaches where the brush and daily hygiene can’t reach: beneath the gum, down to the root of the tooth, to remove the bacteria that is destroying the ligament and the bone. We carry it out gradually, with the anaesthetic needed to keep you comfortable, and with our specialist following up at every stage. The aim is to halt the disease, stabilise your teeth and make sure you don’t lose any tooth we can save. Because we have our own periodontics specialist: we don’t send you to another clinic, nor are you seen by a general dentist; your case is handled by someone who works specifically on this.
Dudas frecuentes sobre periodontics
Is the treatment painful?
We carry it out under local anaesthetic, so you won't feel any pain during the session. Afterwards there may be some sensitivity for a few days, which is completely normal and soon disappears. Most patients tell us they were expecting something far worse.
How many sessions do I need?
It depends on how advanced the condition is. Some cases are resolved in just a few sessions and others require longer follow-up. At your first visit we explain exactly what we find and what the treatment plan is, with no surprises.
How much does periodontal treatment cost in Valencia?
The cost depends on the extent of the treatment and the number of teeth affected. We give you an assessment with no obligation at your first visit and explain the full quote before we start. No small print.
Why do my gums bleed if I brush properly?
Bleeding is a sign of inflammation, not that you're brushing too hard. Many people think it's normal or that it's down to the stiffness of the brush, but there's almost always a periodontal cause behind it. It's exactly the kind of thing we look at on the first visit.
Can gum disease be cured?
Periodontitis can't be fully reversed, but it can be halted and very well controlled with the right treatment. Many of our patients have had stable teeth for years thanks to good periodontal maintenance. The sooner we treat it, the better the results we achieve.
If my gums are treated, can I still lose my teeth?
If we follow the treatment and the subsequent maintenance, the aim is for you not to lose a single tooth. Gum disease treated in time is kept under control. The risk of losing teeth appears when it isn't treated or when follow-up is abandoned.
