Tooth fractures from poolside knocks: prevention and what to do
July 16, 2024
The wet, slippery floors around swimming pools are a common cause of knocks to the mouth in summer, especially among children. Knowing how to prevent them and how to react makes all the difference.
Why they happen in summer
Running along the wet edge, jumping in and pushing turn the pool into the perfect setting for falls. The most common result is a dental injury: from a small crack to a fracture or the complete avulsion (loss) of the tooth.
What to do if it happens
Acting quickly and properly greatly improves the outlook:
- If a piece breaks off. Keep it in milk or saline and come in as soon as possible; the tooth can often be rebuilt.
- If the whole tooth comes out. Don’t clean it by rubbing. Keep it in milk or saline solution and go to A&E within the hour.
- If it only moves or hurts. Apply something cold and come to the clinic so we can assess how serious the knock is.
Prevention comes first
The best measure is not running in wet areas and keeping an eye on the little ones. For children who play contact sports, a mouthguard prevents most fractures.

Is it all right to keep the tooth in water?
Better in milk or saline solution: water damages the cells of the root. And never clean it by rubbing or dry it.
