At what age should you stop the dummy?

At what age should you stop the dummy?

The dummy plays an important role in the first few months, but keeping it for too long can affect how the mouth develops. Finding the right moment is key.

The ideal moment

The general recommendation is to give it up between 18 months and 2 years, and no later than 3. Up to that age, using the dummy doesn’t usually leave any lasting effects; beyond that, the risk of altering the bite increases the longer it goes on.

The risks of keeping it too long

Prolonged use can cause an open bite, a narrower palate and problems with the position of the teeth and tongue. Some of these changes end up needing orthodontics. On the other hand, taking it away too abruptly or too early isn’t ideal either: it’s best done gradually.

How do I take it away without it being a drama?

Gradually: cutting its use down to specific moments, not turning to it at every cry and praising progress positively. Patience works better than an outright ban.
