6 tips for looking after your teeth in winter
January 16, 2024
Winter brings its own challenges for dental health: sensitivity to the cold, colds and end-of-year stress can all take their toll on your mouth. With a few simple measures it's easy to prevent it.
Six tips for the cold
- Protect sensitive teeth. Cold air can cause discomfort. A toothpaste for sensitivity and breathing through your nose both help.
- Watch out for sudden temperature changes. Going from the cold to a very hot drink stresses the enamel; ease off the contrasts.
- Keep an eye on hydration. In winter we drink less water; a dry mouth encourages tooth decay and bad breath.
- Don’t neglect hygiene when you have a cold. Cough syrups usually contain sugar; brush your teeth after taking them.
- Manage end-of-year stress. The festive season triggers bruxism; if you clench your teeth, mention it at your check-up.
- Don’t skip your check-up. Starting the year with a check-up and a clean is the best foundation for the months ahead.

Why do I notice more sensitivity in winter?
Cold slightly contracts the tooth and, if the enamel is worn or the gums have receded, the discomfort becomes more pronounced. It's worth assessing the cause.
