Xerostomia: what dry mouth is, its types and solution
November 26, 2024
Noticing a dry mouth now and then is normal. When that dryness persists over time, we call it xerostomia, and it's worth knowing why it happens because it affects the health of the whole mouth.
What is xerostomia?
Xerostomia is the sensation of dry mouth caused by a reduction in saliva flow. Saliva doesn’t only help us speak and swallow: it protects the teeth from decay, maintains the balance of the oral flora and aids digestion. When it’s lacking, discomfort and the risk of dental problems increase.
The most common types and causes
Dry mouth can be reversible or chronic, and have very different origins:
- From medication. This is the most common cause. Many everyday medicines reduce saliva production as a side effect.
- From age and habits. Ageing, tobacco, alcohol and caffeine all contribute to a drier mouth.
- From illnesses and treatments. Some conditions and medical treatments directly affect the salivary glands.

Does xerostomia have a solution?
Yes. The first step is to identify the cause. From there, we combine measures to stimulate saliva, saliva substitutes if needed and closer preventive monitoring to protect the teeth.
Is drinking plenty of water enough?
It helps and provides relief, but it doesn't resolve the cause. If the dryness is constant, it's worth investigating in order to treat the underlying cause.
