Tooth decay is the most common oral health condition in childhood, and also one of the most preventable. The habits children pick up early shape their dental health for life.
What is tooth decay?
Tooth decay is the destruction of the tooth caused by the acids that bacteria produce as they feed on sugars. It starts with a slight demineralisation of the enamel and, if left untreated, advances towards the inside of the tooth until it reaches the nerve.
How to prevent it from an early age
Prevention rests on three pillars:
- Hygiene from the first tooth. Supervised brushing with an age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste, twice a day.
- Controlling sugar. Limit sweets, juices and sugary snacks, especially between meals.
- Regular check-ups. Seeing the paediatric dentist catches cavities early and allows sealants or preventive fluoride to be applied.

Do cavities in baby teeth need to be treated?
Yes. Even though they will fall out, an untreated cavity hurts, becomes infected and can damage the permanent tooth coming through underneath.
