White spots on teeth: why they appear and how to remove them
November 5, 2024
White spots on teeth are more common than they seem. They are usually a sign that the enamel has lost minerals at that point, and it's worth knowing why.
Why do they appear?
Most of them are areas of enamel demineralisation: the tooth has lost minerals and that area looks more opaque and white. The most common causes are insufficient hygiene (especially around braces), too much fluoride during childhood (fluorosis) or factors that occurred while the tooth was still forming.
How they are treated
Treatment depends on the origin and depth of the spot:
- Remineralisation. On recent, surface-level spots, products with fluoride and phosphates help to recover the lost mineral.
- Microabrasion. A controlled polishing of the enamel that removes the most superficial spots.
- Infiltration or aesthetic treatment. When they are visible and deep, infiltration techniques or composite even out the colour.

Can they be prevented?
Yes: with good hygiene —especially if you wear braces— and by keeping fluoride in check during childhood. A timely check-up stops the demineralisation from progressing.
